The Wines of Portugal

A sit-down tutored tasting with food, led by Jo Locke MW.

Tuesday 14th May 2024 6.30 to 8.30 pm

The Carlton Club

69 St James’s Street

London SW1A 1PJ

Those of you have been following The Wine Society’s 150th Anniversary celebrations, and have read the history of the founding of the society, will know that it was mainly due to the large amount of wine left over from the International Exhibition of 1874, and in particular Portuguese wine, that led to the Society’s creation.  Jo Locke MW, buyer for the Wine Society, has agreed to conduct a tutored tasting for us and the buying of Portuguese wine is one of her responsibilities. I therefore thought it appropriate to choose for our tutored tasting the wines of Portugal as the Dining Club’s homage to the Society’s 150th anniversary.

Jo, who will be known to many of you, passed her Master of Wine exam in 1990 and joined the Wine Society in 2004 and has been responsible for Alsace, the Loire and Portugal as well as South Africa, which she passed over to Matthew Horsley last year. Jo has also recently announced her retirement from the Wine Society so this will also be an opportunity to say thank you to her for the wonderful wines she has enabled us to drink over the years as well as the time she has spent with the Dining Club, especially during our trip to Portugal in 2018.

We will be tasting eight superb quality wines in total. As the Carton Club has a number of other functions on the evening of our tasting our aperitif Vadio Rosé Brut, Bairrada 2021 will be tasted in the Churchill room itself and not outside in the hallway as previously, so please move directly into the room.

We will then be seated at tables of eight for our tasting where we will have provided a light snack consisting of cold meats, cheese, marinated artichoke, sun dried tomato and mixed breads.

I have decided not to expand on the wines in the normal manner other than to list them, as we have a far more qualified person than me in Jo, who will tell us all we need to know during the tasting.
