Domaine Gresser Alsace Tutored Tasting

Carlton Club, 69, St James’s Street, London SW1A 1PJ
Dress Code: Jacket & Ties for Gentlemen to comply with the Carlton Club rules, no jeans
We are extremely fortunate through our Administrators, Chris and Corinna Edge, to have persuaded Winemaker Rémy Gresser from Domaine Gresser in Alsace to come and talk about his wines both red and white. So please come and join us at the Carlton Club for a convivial evening with some Alsace Domaine wines kindly supplied by Domaine Gresser.
Rémy was born into a family of winegrowers. He relies on the centuries-old wine-growing tradition that has been passed down to him, and centuries of experimentation in planting different grape varieties which have made it possible to determine the grape variety which best expresses the vibration of the place and the minerality of the rocks. He feels like a farmer and a craftsman of the vine. For him wine is above all the combined expression of its terroir and the grape variety. The vineyard is located in the heart of Andlau, a medieval town south of Strasbourg, between Mont Sainte-Odile and Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle. With that introduction, we will leave Rémy to talk about the terroir and environment that produces his wines.
List of Wines
To start our tasting we will have a Cremant d’Alsace Brut NV which has fine and persistent bubbles with a generous foam. A very beautiful nose, elegant, fresh and easy to drink.
We will follow with Brandhof Pinot Noir 2023 which has a nose of red fruits that we then find in the mouth with a nice minerality and a beautiful finish on the salinity of limestone
To compare Rieslings we have Duttenberg Riesling 2024 with a fruity nose typical of Rieslings. In the mouth the attack is frank and one can discover a beautiful balance between the richness of the grape and the salinity of the rock. Then Kastelberg GC Riesling 2020 with a fruity nose, complexity of rare precision, pure wonder in the mouth, and verticality of exceptional precision, great purity, superb balance between powerful body and a beautiful and persistent breed. Superb vintage with great ageing potential.
For Pinot Gris we have Brandhof Pinot Gris 2023 with a beautiful golden yellow colour, a slightly spicy nose with notes of dried fruit and smoke as well as aromas of forest (acacia and honey). On the palate, we discover richness that is ample, but always without heaviness. Then Wiebelsberg GC Pinot Gris 2017. Smoky, with aromas of undergrowth (acacia and honey), on the palate we discover a lacy richness prolonged by a beautiful minerality, characteristic of the Vosges pink sandstone on the finish.
For Gewurztraminer we have to compare Kritt Gewurztraminer 2022 which has a very spicy and frivolous nose. In the mouth, a superb balance is revealed around a beautiful texture. Comparing with Moenchberg GC Gewurztraminer 2019 where the nose and mouth are dominated by spices. The fossil sandstone of Mount Sainte-Oldier offers a lacy minerality that balances the full and velvety body.

We will have individually plated cold cuts and cheese, comprising Parmesan chunks, David-Staw Cheddar, mortadella, salami, smoked duck breast, marinated artichoke, sun-dried tomato, mixed olives on a bed of rocket salad and mixed bread baskets.
