This event is very much in the way of an experiment, one which I hope will prove successful and can form the model for such events in the future. We have had a couple of tutored tastings at the Carlton Club in recent years where we sampled a flight of wines and those that wished to stayed on for an optional supper afterwards. For this event we will be sampling ten wines but alongside a two course supper so that we can see how each of the wines complements the food. This will make the logistics slightly more complicated, not to mention the table settings!

We are very lucky to have secured the services of Derek Smedley MW to take us through the wines. Derek is well known to the club, has been our speaker at dinners, and was the wine guide on our 2010 tour of the Rhone. He has been in the wine trade for more than half a century, working for Harveys, Gilbeys and Whitbread. Nowadays he is a consultant looking after City Livery Companies, West End clubs, and institutions of learning.

The theme for this evening is the ‘The World of Cabernet’. We will start with a glass of the Carlton Club’s champagne and then move into the dining room for the tasting of ten cabernet-based wines. Four of the wines will come from our own claret reserves, while Derek will be supplying the other six.

The four wines from our reserves are La Parde de Haut-Bailly 2005, Château Beau-Site 2003, Château Pontet Canet 1996, and Château Léoville Las Cases 1989. The La Parde offers an opportunity to taste claret from the much-trumpeted 2005 vintage which I know our members have squirreled away, as yet untouched, by the case load. This is the second wine of Haut-Bailly, a property close to Léognan in the Graves which produces elegant wines in the best vintages. Château Beau-Site is in St. Estèphe and this wine is from the earlier drinking 2003 vintage. From Pauillac we have the fifth-growth Château Pontet Canet 1996. This should be a complex wine still at the start of its drinking window. The Léoville Las Cases 1989 from St. Julien attracted 95 Parker points when he tasted it in 1991, likening it to a synthesis of the 1982 and 1986 vintages.

The six wines Derek has acquired for us are:
Constantia Glen 5 2013                                                               South Africa - Constantia
Ernie Els Signature Blend 2011                                                 South Africa - Stellenbosch
Bremerton Walter's Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2009   South Australia - Langhorne Creek
Hollick Ravenswood Cabernet Sauvignon 2009                   South Australia - Coonawarra
Persevo Cabernet Sauvignon NV                                             Chile - Garage Wines, Maule Valley
Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon 2009                                   Argentina - Mendoza

It promises to be a fascinating opportunity to compare styles of wine making and to receive some valuable education in the process. I have once again been generous with the pricing. Our capacity is limited to just over 60, so early application is encouraged!
