As I have said before, we have lots of venerable, I nearly wrote ‘old’, red wine in the Club’s reserves at Stevenage. So, tonight, not only will you be able to drink wines you might not normally do, there will be a fair few to be won in the amazing and generous Raffle.

These wines were purchased many years ago, and now carry a considerable price, if you wanted to buy them. Of course, more recent vintages are even more expensive. We have them, we must drink them. The chance to compare all these different wines will help you develop your thoughts as to what you like. I hope it is not just claret!

We will begin with a welcoming 2009 Riesling, Schloss Lieser, then on to three more white wines, Corton Charlemagne Bonneau de Martray 2000, a noted burgundy, and Pavillon Blanc Margaux 1998, - there may well be some bottle variation! As an extra, Château Couhins-Lurton 1998, a Graves, the way to use Sauvignon. If you like it, and you probably will, there’s one in the raffle....

Moving on to red wines, you will get to taste four old burgundies, Nuits St Georges, Robert Arnoux, 1996 and Gevrey Chambertin, Les Evocelles 1996 from Lucien Boillot, a wine for the winter months. Then a Volnay, Vielles Vignes 1999, by Nicolas Potel, from a very good year, followed by another Gevrey Chambertin, Vielles Vignes, 2004, Alain Burguet. These wines are well developed, each with a lovely nose and long in the mouth.

I’m going to offer you seven clarets, some won’t be seen again.
Pauillac 2002
Château Phélan Ségur 2002 St Estèphe
Château Ducru Beaucaillou 1997 St Julien

Château Berliquet 1997 St Émilion
Château d’Angludet 1994, Margaux, in magnum
Château Grand-Puy Lacoste 1990 Pauillac
Chateau Canon 1985 St-Émilion

Then to close the evening, Graham 1985, a very good vintage, and a very good port.

Happy Christmas, and Good Luck in the Raffle!
