Wine Tour – Rhône – June 2010
For our 13th wine tour, the dining Club will visit the Rhône, a region previously explored by Dining Club members in 1992, from 14 to 19 June 2010.
Working with tour organisers Arblaster & Clarke and Derek Smedley, MW, our wine guide, with input from Marcel Orford-Williams, the Wine Society’s Rhône specialist, a sub-committee of the Dining Club has put together an itinerary under which we shall fly from Heathrow to Lyons on Monday 14 June and back from Marseilles to Gatwick on Saturday 19 June.
Details of the visit are still being finalised, but we will visit both the Northern and Southern Rhône. Amongst the growers that we hope to visit are Chapoutier, Guigal, Jaboulet, Delas, Vieux Télégraphe and Beaucastel. However, we expect that there will still be free time in some of the attractive local cities and towns, such as Avignon, Orange and St-Rémy.
The hotels we shall stay in are the Hôtel de France, Valence, and the Hôtel d’Europe, Avignon. At least one meal each day will be included and we plan, if possible, to visit two Michelin-starred restaurants, although arrangements for that are still to be finalised.
The tour is being organised by Arblaster & Clarke, who have organised many successful tours for us since 1994. We shall be accompanied by Derek Smedley, MW, who has visited the Rhône many times, and will be led by one of Arblaster & Clarke’s bilingual tour guides.
As you will see from the itinerary, the cost of the tour is expected to be under £2000 per person, based on two persons sharing a standard double or twin-bedded room. To register your interest, please contact by 7 January at the latest, Cindy-Marie Harvey at Arblaster & Clarke Wine Tours Ltd, Cedar Court, 5 College Street, Petersfield GU31 4AE (tel: 01730 263111; fax: 01730 711295; email: firstname.lastname@example.org). You will need to pay a deposit of £350 per person, either by cheque or by credit or debit card. Your cheque will not be cashed or your card charged until your place has been confirmed. Please note that credit cards incur an additional 1.5% fee, whereas debit cards do not. Arblaster & Clarke’s office hours over the holiday period are set out at the end of this letter.
I am sure most of you will remember that previous tours have been heavily over-subscribed, and we had to have ballots to select those who were able to take part in them. There are only 30 places available for this tour, which we expect to be similarly over-subscribed, so it is essential that the deadline of 7 January is met by you, to ensure that you do not lose your opportunity at least to take part in the ballot, which we expect to be completed by 11 January. The ballot will be weighted according to membership, attendance at functions since 2008, and unsuccessful applications to take part in the Club’s tour to Italy in 2008.
If you have any questions about the tour, do contact Cindy-Marie or one of her colleagues at Arblaster & Clarke, who will be very happy to answer them.
Longer-standing members will remember the previous trip to the Rhône, and many of us buy these wines regularly, so this tour will give us all an opportunity to improve our knowledge and meet many interesting producers, as well as to visit a very attractive region of France. Your Committee is confident that this will be a very memorable tour.
